Task 3: Creative & Critical Thinking – Dr. Stephen Brookfield, Keynote address at the 2012 DePaul University Teaching Commons Fall Forum

The critical thinking: A good critical thinker is someone who is aware of the assumptions they make, whether those assumptions are accurate or not. What makes us a good critical thinker is the way we think about our life decisions: Actions, judgments, and reasons.

The creative thinking: A good creative thinker is someone who view ideas from multiples points of view and generate interpretations based on those views. Also, is able to communicate that thought through a variety of different ways.

Kinds of assumptions:
·        Causal: Causal assumptions are cause and effects assumptions. Why things happen?
·        Prescriptive: A prescriptive assumption are the thoughts that we have about what a good person does to do something? How things should happen and how we should behave.
·        Paradigmatic: Pragmatic assumptions are structuring assumptions viewed as obvious, taken for granted something.
One of the problems with critical thinking is that the significance of the term might have different understandings as for students, teachers, and researchers.

4 key intellectual traditions:
1.     Analytic philosophy: Students who thinks critically are good constructing and deconstructing arguments and know the difference between the types of reasoning.
2.     Natural science: Critical thinking is the application of scientific methods. You creatively generate what seems a hypothesis.
3.     Critical theory - The traditional critical theory: A critical thinker is someone who has a high and political consciousness. Is someone who can manipulate ideologically someone.
4.     Pragmatism: Someone who sees knowledge as something that is constantly reinvented open to new ways of thinking and open to new experiences.

  2. Dear Oscar:
I think you did a great job summarizing what Dr. Brookfield say in his lecture. Although this task was just about summarizing and organizing the lecture in a way your reader could be provided with undertandable and consice aspects, and I think you managed to do it very well. Talking about the lecture itself, I want to tell you when I watch the video I though of my experience as a teacher and I tried to answer the question Dr. Brookfield stated in his lecture, and it was a very interesenting task. I hope you did it too.
Keep sharing your knowledge and thoughts.
